Podcasts Have Been Increasing in Popularity Since 2020

The popularity of podcasts has surged internationally as of 2022, cementing their status as a common household entertainment choice. The emergence of the pandemic significantly contributed to this phenomenon, as people sought solace in podcasts during frequent lockdowns.

In the United States, an increasing number of individuals, spanning ages 12 to 54, are embracing podcasts, with 53% having tuned in within the last month and a staggering 79% displaying familiarity with the medium. This trend is not limited to the United States alone; Canada experienced a 1% increase in podcast listeners between 2020 and 2021. Impressively, 27% of Canadian podcast enthusiasts consume an average of three podcast episodes per week.

Furthermore, in 2021, 38% of Canadians aged twelve and older were monthly listeners, displaying modest growth from the previous year. Despite this, engagement stays robust, with 76% of listeners indulging in most or all podcast episodes, averaging five podcasts weekly. The podcasting fervour extends to Europe as well. The United Kingdom boasts a substantial listenership of 15.61 million, while Italy’s podcast audience reached 12.1 million in 2019. Even in South Korea, podcasts gained significant ground, with 58% of respondents claiming to have engaged with podcasts within the past month as of April 2021. Across borders, podcasts have appeared as a global medium for gathering, sharing, and connecting.
